Urbana, OH may be a city, but that doesn’t mean that there is a lack of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities in the area. In fact, there are several great spots nearby to fish, boat, hunt, and camp. If you’re looking to enjoy more outdoor activities, read on to discover our favorite fishing spots nearby.

1. Melvin Miller Park

Our favorite place in the area to fish is Melvin Miller Park at 731 Childrens Home Road. Tens of millions of sport fish are stocked in the state by the ODNR Division of Wildlife each year, and there are plenty of fish in the two-acre fishing pond at Melvin Miller Park. Some of the fish you can expect to catch include blue catfish, rainbow trout, steelhead, and brown trout.

2. Kiser Lake State Park

We have also found that Kiser Lake State Park is a great place to cast a line. Located at 4889 N State Route 235, this 531-acre state park features a 396-acre lake. There are over five miles of shoreline that you can fish from and several boat ramps you can launch from. There are also five fishing piers on the lake. In this state park, you can expect to catch such fish as:

  • Wiper
  • Crappie
  • Channel catfish
  • Bluegill
  • Largemouth bass

If you’re angling for bluegill sunfish, target the vegetated parts of the lake and use wax worms, red worms, or nightcrawlers. The vegetated portions of the lake are also home to an abundance of crappie. You can attract this species of fish with minnows.

3. Buck Creek State Park

Finally, we recommend fishing at Buck Creek State Park at 1976 Buck Creek Lane. Here, you will find an expansive reservoir that allows for motorboating and a fishing pier that is perfect for all levels of anglers. Some of the most sought-after fish in this reservoir are walleye, muskie, and white bass. However, you also have a chance to catch such fish species as:

  • Black bass
  • Catfish
  • Crappie
  • Bluegill

Keep in mind that individuals who are at least 16 years of age must have a valid Ohio fishing license, and you must follow all Ohio fishing regulations while fishing. For instance, there is no limit to the number of blue and flathead catfish you can catch daily if the fish is under 35″ inches. However, you are limited to 30 yellow perch daily.

There are many great places to spend the day fishing in the Urbana area, but you need a reliable vehicle to get there. If you’ve had many problems with your current vehicle recently, visit us today at White’s Ford to take a 2023 Ford F-150 for a test drive.
