Ford offers the Explorer in a few different engine options, and the base turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine churns out an impressive 300 horses of power and 310 pound-feet of torque, beating out the Highlander's 265 horsepower four-cylinder engine. The Explorer also offers more powerful V-6 engines, and rear-wheel drive is standard. Both the Explorer and the Highlander offer four-wheel drive.

Exterior

When properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds. Its higher towing capacity gives it a slight edge over the Highlander, which can tow up to 5,000 pounds. The Explorer also offers superior off-road features, including a robust terrain management system. The SUV's higher ground clearance also makes it easier for drivers to navigate tough terrain, and the off-road-focused Timberline model adds skid plates and upgraded shocks.

Interior

There's little doubt that the Explorer has the roomier interior, and it boasts 87.8 cubic feet of cargo space compared to the Highlander's 84.3 cubic feet of space.
